Ethylene glycol monopropyl ether, EGP or propyl cellosolve, has the formula C5H12O2 and CAS number 2807-30-9. It is a clear colourless liquid, miscible with water and organic solvents, with a boiling point and evaporation rate between those of the ethyl and butyl homologues. The ethylene-series glycol ethers form a predictable ladder, and EGP occupies the rung between EE and EB. Each carbon added to the alkyl group increases boiling point, slows evaporation, strengthens solvency for oils and resins and reduces water affinity, in a consistent progression. Formulators use that ladder to tune drying: too fast an evaporation traps solvent bubbles and causes blushing, too slow leaves a film soft and vulnerable. EGP is specified where the three-carbon chain hits the required balance between solvency and flash-off rate that neither of its neighbours provides. Like other propyl and butyl homologues it does not carry the reproductive toxicity classification applied to the methyl and ethyl members of the series. It is used in coatings and inks, industrial and institutional cleaners, coupling and levelling applications, and as a chemical intermediate.
