      1

      Is this a masking agent?

No. A masking agent covers odour with fragrance, and both remain detectable. A plant-based neutraliser works on the odour molecules themselves: certain terpenes and aldehydes from plant oils react with or bind to amines, mercaptans and sulphides, forming larger non-volatile compounds that cannot reach the nose. The odour is chemically removed rather than covered.
      2

When should this be used rather than a microbial product?

Where the odour is intermittent or airborne rather than arising from a standing accumulation of organic matter, and where an immediate effect is needed. A transfer station, a tank vent or a waste movement offers no continuous substrate for bacteria to work on, and a bioaugmentation product would have nothing to establish on. A plant-based neutraliser acts on the vapour directly.
      3

      How is it applied?

Through vapour-phase misting lines, as a direct spray, or dosed into a scrubber or fogging system. Vapour-phase systems are the usual arrangement for site boundary and enclosed area control, since they distribute a fine mist across the air space where the odour is rather than treating a surface.
      4

Can it be used alongside a microbial product?

Yes, and the combination is common. The microbial product removes the source over days while the plant-based neutraliser deals with the odour immediately and covers episodic releases. They work by different mechanisms and do not interfere with one another, provided the neutraliser is not dosed at a concentration that inhibits the culture.
