PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil is a polyethylene-glycol derivative of hydrogenated castor oil. Its structure combines water-affine polyoxyethylene portions with fatty components, creating the amphiphilic character required for a non-ionic surfactant. It is commonly represented by an off-white to pale-yellow soft waxy paste, with physical consistency depending on grade and temperature. In aqueous cosmetic development, it helps incorporate fragrance and other lipophilic ingredients through solubilisation and can contribute to oil-in-water emulsification. The required amount depends on the identity and loading of the oil-soluble material and on the rest of the formula. Clarity, odour, foam and stability therefore need to be checked in the intended system rather than predicted from the ingredient name. Confirm the exact ingredient declaration, composition and agreed analytical quality before selection. Compare processing behaviour and dilution performance using the proposed fragrance or oil. Hydrogenated castor wax itself does not provide this same surfactant function, and different castor-oil ethoxylates should be compared by their own technical data.
