A masking agent adds fragrance over the odour, so both are present and the effect fades as the fragrance does. A microbial product introduces organisms that consume the fats, proteins and starches the odour compounds are generated from, so the substrate is removed and the odour stops being produced. The first covers the symptom, the second removes the cause.

The introduced organisms have to establish a population and begin degrading the accumulated organic matter, so results build progressively and depend on regular continued dosing. Where an immediate effect is needed, a plant-based neutraliser acts on the odour molecules directly and can be used alongside while the culture establishes.

Continuous biocide or strong disinfectant dosing in the same line, which kills the introduced organisms along with everything else. Extremes of pH and temperature, and heavy solvent or chemical loading, will also prevent establishment. The environment has to support the culture, so the product is unsuitable where the drain also receives disinfectant.

Drains, grease traps, sumps, pumping stations, waste transfer areas and agricultural slurry handling, in short wherever organic matter accumulates and breaks down anaerobically. Dosing is continuous or regular rather than one-off, since the population needs maintaining against washout and the substrate keeps arriving.
