    IPTG (Isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactopyranoside)

    About This Product

IPTG, isopropyl-β-D-thiogalactopyranoside (C9H18O5S, molecular weight 238.3, CAS 367-93-1), is a synthetic mimic of allolactose. It is supplied in anhydrous form as a white or almost white crystalline powder with a purity of 98–101%, moisture of 0.2% max and a melting point of 105–110 °C, and it dissolves in water and methanol. IPTG binds the lac repressor and frees the operator, switching on genes placed under lac control; because bacteria do not metabolise it, its inducing concentration stays steady through a culture. Laboratories and fermentation plants use it to induce recombinant protein and enzyme expression in E. coli, and pair it with X-Gal for blue–white screening of recombinant colonies. IPTG is a laboratory and bioprocess reagent, not a cosmetic, food or medicinal ingredient. Obtain a lot certificate that states the test conditions behind the specific rotation and pH figures quoted by the producer, and, for molecular-biology work, whether the lot is tested for nuclease activity.
