Dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether acetate, DPMA, is produced by acetylating DPM. It is a clear colourless liquid with a mild ester odour, of low water miscibility and high boiling point, supplied as an isomer mixture. It combines two modifications that each slow a solvent down. The two-unit glycol backbone raises boiling point relative to the single-unit PMA, and esterifying the hydroxyl removes hydrogen bonding with water while further increasing molecular weight. The result is one of the slowest-evaporating glycol ether acetates available, which is why it is specified as a tail solvent in coatings that need a long open time, such as high-build industrial finishes and coil coatings cured at temperature. The absence of a free hydroxyl is equally important: an active hydrogen reacts with isocyanate, so only acetates can be used in two-pack polyurethane formulations, and DPMA provides that compatibility at the slow end of the evaporation range where few alternatives exist. It is used in two-pack polyurethane coatings, coil and can coatings, high-build industrial finishes, printing inks and as a retarder.
