Dipropylene glycol monoethyl ether, DPE, has CAS number 30025-38-8 and is built on a two-unit propylene glycol backbone with an ethyl ether cap. It is a clear colourless liquid, miscible with water and with most organic solvents, and is supplied as an isomer mixture. It sits one rung above DPM on the alkyl ladder and one above PE on the glycol ladder, which places it among the slower, higher-boiling P-series ethers while retaining good water tolerance. The commercial interest in this part of the range is largely about odour and exposure rather than pure solvency. Consumer cleaning products have to perform without the sharp solvent smell associated with faster ethers, and they have to meet stricter toxicological expectations than industrial products. The dipropylene ethers are mild in odour, low in volatility so airborne exposure is limited, and carry the favourable metabolic profile of the propylene series. DPE is specified where that combination matters more than speed of evaporation. It is used in household and institutional cleaners, water-based coatings, printing inks, textile processing and as a coupling solvent.
