Dioctyl sebacate, more precisely bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate, CAS 122-62-3, is an ester of sebacic acid, a ten-carbon diacid traditionally obtained from castor oil. It is supplied as a light yellow to colourless clear liquid. Its value is low-temperature performance. The long, flexible aliphatic sebacate backbone keeps the plasticised compound's glass transition well below that achieved with aromatic phthalate esters, so articles stay pliable in cold conditions instead of becoming stiff and brittle. That is why it appears in cold-resistant wire and cable, meat preservation and frozen food films, and outdoor applications. It is more expensive than general-purpose phthalates, so the supplier notes it is often used in combination with them: a phthalate carries the bulk of the plasticiser loading and the sebacate is added to buy the low-temperature property. Declared applications are cold-resistant wire and cable materials, high-grade food and meat preservation film, artificial leather, film, conveyor belt, plate and sheet. Packed 70 kg flexitank tote (22,000 kg/20' container), 190 kg drum (15,200 kg/container) or 920 kg IBC tote (18,400 kg/container).
