A sphere has the smallest surface area for its volume, so pearls generate very little dust when poured or conveyed, which materially reduces the inhalation and eye hazard and keeps equipment free of caustic residue. They also flow freely through screw feeders and volumetric dispensers where irregular flakes bridge and hang up.

Do pearls keep better than flakes?
Yes. The reduced surface area means slower uptake of atmospheric moisture and carbon dioxide, so pearls retain assay longer in partially used packaging and cake less readily. Both forms should still be resealed and stored dry, but the pearl form is more forgiving where packaging is opened repeatedly.

What is the trade-off with pearls?
Slower dissolution, again because of the lower surface area. Make-up generally requires agitation and takes longer than with flakes. Where a solution is needed quickly and dust can be controlled, flakes may be preferred; where dosing equipment and handling exposure are the priority, pearls usually win.

Is the assay the same as flakes?
Yes, both are supplied at 99 percent minimum sodium hydroxide. The difference between the two products is entirely physical form, not chemistry or purity, so a formulation or process using one can use the other provided the dissolution step is adjusted for the different rate.
