Poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate), PBAT, is a flexible aliphatic-aromatic copolyester, and this is a PBAT-based compound supplied as pellets for conversion into pressure sensitive adhesive. The base polymer is soft and slow to crystallise rather than rigid, which is what lets an adhesive built on it stay permanently tacky at ambient temperature instead of setting hard. A pressure sensitive adhesive works by viscoelastic flow rather than by curing. It wets the substrate under light pressure, and the bond is a balance between its ability to flow into surface irregularities and its resistance to being pulled back out of them. Tack, peel and shear are three points on that balance, set against the facestock and the substrate rather than quoted in isolation, because the same adhesive behaves differently behind a paper face than behind a film one. The reason for the biodegradable base is end of life: a label and its adhesive travel with the pack into the waste stream, and on a certified compostable pack a conventional acrylic PSA is a contaminant, labels being one of the most common reasons a pack fails certification. Supplied as a raw material for processing on the buyer's own line; we do not produce finished articles. It is used in compostable label stock, packaging tape and adhesive manufacture.
