The divalent zinc ion forms ionic bridges between carboxyl groups on neighbouring polymer chains, tying them together. Because the bond is ionic rather than covalent it can be reversible under some conditions, which is exploited in coatings and adhesives to build viscosity and wet strength without permanently curing the system.

Why is it used to make zinc oxide nanoparticles?
Because a soluble molecular precursor is required. Nanoparticle synthesis needs the zinc delivered as dissolved ions so that nucleation and growth can be controlled; starting from insoluble zinc oxide would defeat the purpose. Zinc acetate also decomposes cleanly on heating, leaving zinc oxide with no other residue.

Is zinc acetate soluble in alcohol?
