    Thymol

    About This Product

Thymol (CAS 89-83-8, EINECS 201-944-8), also named 6-isopropyl-3-methylphenol, is a monoterpene phenol with the formula C10H14O and a molecular weight of 150.218. It is a white crystalline solid or powder with a pungent odour. Literature values give a melting point of 48-51 °C, a boiling point of 232 °C and a density of 0.965 g/mL at 25 °C; it dissolves in water only to about 0.1 g/100 mL at 20 °C. In the daily-chemical industry it serves as a flavour and aroma material, bringing the sharp, warm herbal character of thyme to oral-care flavours, soaps and household fragrance blends. Purity and assay are confirmed on enquiry. Thymol is classified as harmful if swallowed, as causing severe skin burns and eye damage and as a chronic hazard to the aquatic environment, so read the safety data sheet before handling, and confirm that the grade suits any flavour or cosmetic application.
