Tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether, TETREDM or tetraglyme, has the formula C10H22O5 and CAS number 143-24-8. It is a clear colourless liquid, fully water miscible, aprotic, and boils above 275 degrees Celsius with an extremely low vapour pressure. It is the endpoint of the glyme series in common use, and its properties follow directly from chain length. Five ether oxygens give the strongest cation-solvating ability of the family, so it dissolves and activates salts and organometallic species that even triglyme handles poorly, and it is used where a crown ether would otherwise be required. Its very high boiling point and negligible vapour pressure allow reactions at temperatures no other glyme reaches and make it suitable as a heat-transfer and absorption medium where solvent loss must be avoided. In electrochemistry it is used in lithium and sodium battery research precisely because it solvates the alkali metal cation strongly while remaining stable at the electrode. Peroxide formation on storage applies, and classification should be confirmed for the destination market. It is used in high-temperature organometallic synthesis, battery and electrochemical systems, gas absorption and separation, and as a heat-transfer fluid.
