It is formed by heating disodium phosphate until two phosphate units condense together and eliminate a molecule of water, giving a single anion containing two phosphorus atoms. That makes it the simplest of the condensed phosphates, sitting between the simple orthophosphates and the long-chain polyphosphates such as SHMP in both structure and behaviour.

How does TSPP compare with SHMP as a sequestrant?
It sequesters calcium and magnesium less strongly than SHMP, because its chain is far shorter and offers fewer coordination points. Where strong sequestration or threshold scale inhibition is the requirement, SHMP is the better choice. TSPP is selected where dispersion and alkalinity matter more than chelating strength.

What pH does TSPP give in solution?
Around 10, distinctly alkaline. That alkalinity contributes to its cleaning performance, assisting soil removal alongside its dispersing action, and it is part of why TSPP is used in detergent and industrial cleaning formulations rather than only as a dispersant.
