      Why choose the potassium benzoate over the sodium salt?

      To avoid the sodium ion. Sodium raises the conductivity of a fluid, which matters where a system is monitored by conductivity or where the liquid contacts electrical or electronic components, and it interferes in some catalytic and glass-contacting processes where alkali metal balance is controlled. The benzoate anion, which carries the function, is identical in both.

      Is potassium benzoate more soluble than sodium benzoate?

      Yes, appreciably. That allows more concentrated dosing solutions, which reduces storage volume and the risk of crystallisation in cold dosing lines or in outdoor equipment during winter. In a plant dosing continuously, that practical difference can outweigh the higher cost per tonne.

      Does it work as a preservative at neutral pH?

      No. Like all benzoates, its antimicrobial activity depends on the small equilibrium fraction present as undissociated benzoic acid, and that fraction collapses as pH rises above about 4.5. Where a system is near neutral, a benzoate will not preserve it and a different chemistry is required regardless of which cation is used.

      Where is it typically used?

      In industrial and metalworking fluids, corrosion inhibitor packages, water-based coatings and adhesives, and generally in low-sodium formulations. It is also used as a preservative in reduced-sodium beverages, though that is a food application requiring the appropriate grade and documentation.
