About This Product
Potassium acetate, C2H3KO2 with CAS number 127-08-2, is supplied as a colourless liquid concentrate, typically around 50 percent, or as a white deliquescent solid. It is very soluble in water and strongly hygroscopic. Airfield de-icing is its largest and most demanding application, and the reason is what it does not do. Chloride de-icers such as sodium and calcium chloride are cheap and effective but severely corrosive to aluminium, and chloride attack on cadmium-plated fasteners and on carbon brake discs caused enough airframe damage that chloride was banned airside at most airports. Acetate and formate de-icers depress the freezing point comparably while being far less aggressive to aluminium and compatible with carbon brakes. Potassium acetate is the liquid of choice for runways and taxiways because it works to around minus 26 degrees Celsius and leaves no gritty residue to be ingested by engines. It is also used as a dehydrating agent, a buffer, a catalyst in polyurethane foam manufacture and as the extinguishing agent in wet chemical kitchen fire suppression systems. It is used in runway and aircraft de-icing, polyurethane catalysis, kitchen fire suppression, buffers and as a dehydrating agent. Bio Green Chem supplies potassium acetate to specification on assay, pH, water content, chloride, sulfate, iron and heavy metals.
