In a drying coating, solvents leave in sequence and the last one determines how well the film levels. A slow tail solvent keeps the film mobile long enough for surface tension to pull out brush marks and orange peel, and keeps the resin dissolved as faster components go.

Is PnB fully water miscible?
No, only partially, which reflects the four-carbon butyl chain. That is a design feature rather than a limitation in coalescent applications, since a solvent that stayed dissolved in the water phase would leave with it instead of entering the polymer particle. In aqueous cleaning formulations the reduced water tolerance does need to be accounted for.

How does PnB compare with EB for cleaning?
PnB gives the strongest grease-cutting power of the propylene series but has lower water tolerance than EB, which remains fully miscible. Where a formulation needs maximum water compatibility EB is generally preferred; where the propylene-series toxicological profile is required or where stronger solvency matters more than water tolerance, PnB is chosen.

What is PnB used in besides coatings?
Industrial cleaners and degreasers, printing inks, and coil and can coatings. In all of these the combination of slow evaporation and strong resin or soil solvency is the reason for selecting it over a faster or more water-loving ether.
