Both halves of the molecule work in its favour. The butyl group gives high affinity for acrylic and vinyl-acrylic polymers, so it partitions readily into the latex particle and softens it efficiently, meaning less is needed to bring the minimum film-forming temperature down to a workable level. The two-unit backbone gives a boiling point high enough to survive through the whole fusion stage.

Why is DPnB only partially water miscible?
Because of the butyl chain, and that limited miscibility is part of the design rather than a defect. A coalescent that stayed fully dissolved in the water phase would evaporate with the water instead of entering the polymer particle where it is needed. Partial miscibility means it partitions preferentially into the latex.

Does DPnB count towards VOC?
In most regulatory schemes, yes, since it evaporates from the film during drying. That is why coalescent efficiency matters commercially as well as technically: a coalescent that works at lower addition contributes less VOC for the same film formation. Regulatory definitions differ between jurisdictions, so the applicable calculation should be confirmed.

What else is DPnB used for?
Industrial and household cleaners, printing inks and coil coatings, where its strong solvency and very slow evaporation are useful for the same reasons they suit coalescence. In cleaning it keeps the formulation working on a surface for an extended contact time rather than drying off.
