Dipropylene glycol methyl ether, DPM or DPGME, is built on a two-unit propylene glycol backbone with a single methyl ether cap. It is a clear colourless liquid, fully miscible with water and with most organic solvents, and it is supplied as a mixture of isomers. Adding a second propylene glycol unit rather than lengthening the alkyl chain is a different way of moving along the solvent ladder, and it produces a different result. Extending the alkyl group raises solvency and cuts water miscibility; extending the glycol backbone raises boiling point and lowers volatility while keeping the molecule water-loving, because each glycol unit brings its own ether oxygen. DPM therefore holds full water miscibility at a boiling point well above PM, which makes it a slow, high-boiling coupling solvent, useful where a formulation needs to stay wet, as in a cleaner that must cling to a vertical surface, or in a coating where an open time of minutes rather than seconds is required. It is also a low-odour solvent with a favourable toxicological profile, so it is used in consumer products. It is used in household and industrial cleaners, water-based coatings as a coalescent, printing inks, agrochemicals and hydraulic fluids.
