Dimethylacetamide (DMAc)

About This Product

N,N-Dimethylacetamide, DMAc or DMAC, has the formula C4H9NO and CAS number 127-19-5. It is a colourless, transparent, high-boiling liquid, boiling at about 165 °C, fully miscible with water and most organic solvents. Chemically it is DMF with an acetyl group in place of the formyl, and that small change makes it markedly more resistant to hydrolysis and to heat. It therefore holds its quality better in hot, wet processes, which is why it is the solvent of choice for dry-spinning spandex and for spinning aramid and other high-performance fibres, and for casting polysulphone, polyethersulphone and PVDF membranes. Fibre and membrane producers are sensitive to trace metals and ionic contamination, which discolour fibre and alter pore formation, so iron is limited here to 0.05 mg/kg, conductivity to 0.05 µS/cm and dimethylamine to 0.0001 percent, with water at 0.01 percent. Like DMF, DMAc is classified as toxic to reproduction, and its EU use is subject to a REACH restriction requiring workplace exposure to be kept below harmonised limits. It is used in spandex, acrylic and aramid fibre spinning, polyimide and membrane production, pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, paint removers and resin processing, and as a reaction solvent and catalyst medium.
