Diisononyl phthalate, DINP with CAS number 28553-12-0, is a clear viscous liquid built from branched nonyl alcohols, giving a higher molecular weight and lower volatility than the octyl phthalates. The distinction between low and high molecular weight phthalates is the central point, because the two groups are treated very differently in both performance and regulation. Larger, more branched plasticiser molecules are held more firmly within the polymer matrix, so they migrate and evaporate far more slowly, giving better permanence, less fogging and lower emissions over the life of the article. Toxicologically the high molecular weight phthalates do not share the reproductive toxicity classification applied to DEHP, DBP and BBP, and DINP is not classified as a CMR substance in the EU. It is nonetheless restricted in toys and childcare articles that can be placed in the mouth, on a precautionary basis, at a limit of 0.1 percent. It became the highest-volume plasticiser in Europe as DEHP was withdrawn, though non-phthalates such as DOTP and DINCH have since taken much of that position. It is used in flexible PVC, cables and wire insulation, flooring and wall coverings, coated fabrics, hoses and automotive interiors.
