Diethylene glycol methyl ethyl ether, DEME, has the formula C7H16O3 and CAS number 1002-67-1. It is a clear colourless liquid, fully capped at both ends and therefore aprotic, with a boiling point between those of diglyme and diethylene glycol diethyl ether. The asymmetric capping is the point of the molecule. Blending diglyme and the diethyl ether to reach an intermediate boiling point gives a mixture that distils over a range and whose components partition differently between phases, which is a problem in a reaction solvent where consistency matters. A single asymmetric compound gives the intermediate properties, moderate water miscibility, a boiling point between the two, intermediate cation-solvating strength, as a pure substance with one boiling point and one behaviour. It retains the aprotic character that makes glyme-type solvents useful with organometallics and hydrides. As with all ethers it forms peroxides on storage and requires inhibition and testing, and destination-market classification should be confirmed given the varied regulatory status within the glyme family. It is used as an aprotic reaction solvent, in battery electrolytes, polymer and fine chemical synthesis, and in extraction and absorption processes.
