Diethylene glycol diethyl ether, DEDE, has the formula C8H18O3 and CAS number 112-36-7. It is a clear colourless liquid with a higher boiling point and lower water miscibility than diglyme, reflecting the two additional carbons on its end caps. Like the other fully capped glycol ethers it carries no hydroxyl, so it is aprotic and chemically inert toward organometallics, isocyanates and strong bases, while its chain of ether oxygens gives it the ability to solvate cations. The practical difference from diglyme is the balance between that solvating power and the solvent's own character. The ethyl caps reduce water miscibility and raise the boiling point, which suits reactions run at higher temperature or work-ups where separation from an aqueous phase is wanted, something the fully water-miscible diglyme makes difficult. It is also used where diglyme's regulatory position is an obstacle, though its own classification should be confirmed for the destination market rather than assumed. Peroxide formation on storage applies to this material as to all ethers. It is used as a high-boiling aprotic reaction solvent, in polymer and fine chemical synthesis, in coatings and inks and in extraction processes.
