Calcium magnesium nitrate is a double salt supplying calcium, magnesium and nitrate nitrogen together, supplied as white to off-white granules or prills, fully water-soluble and hygroscopic. The reason for combining the two cations is that they compete. Calcium and magnesium are taken up by the same transport pathways at the root, so an excess of one suppresses uptake of the other, and a grower correcting a calcium deficiency with calcium nitrate alone can induce a magnesium deficiency in the process. Supplying both in a fixed ratio from a single salt keeps the balance between them constant through the season and removes a common cause of induced deficiency. The nitrate form assists uptake of both, because nitrate absorption at the root drives cation uptake, while an ammonium-based nitrogen source would compete with them. Both cations are also delivered in fully soluble form, which matters because soil reserves of calcium and magnesium are usually present as sparingly soluble carbonates that plants cannot readily access. It is used in fertigation and hydroponics, foliar feeding, greenhouse and soilless culture, and in correcting calcium and magnesium disorders.
