Rapeseed Wax — Frequently Asked Questions

Supply chain as much as performance. Rapeseed is grown widely across Europe, so the wax carries a short and traceable route to a European manufacturer, whereas soy wax is largely imported and brings land-use questions with it. Technically the two are close, though rapeseed tends to give a smoother top surface with less pronounced frosting.

Melting point and intended format. Blocks melt at 42 to 52 degrees Celsius and suit container candles, where the wax needs to soften enough to adhere to glass. Pellets melt at 52 to 60 degrees and are used for pillars and for blending, where a firmer set is required. Pour temperature is 50 to 60 degrees for both.

Typically 7 to 10 percent, comparable to soy wax. As with all triglyceride waxes, exceeding that tends to produce surface sweating and reduced throw rather than more scent. The wax should not be heated above 85 degrees Celsius at any stage, as overheating discolours it permanently.

Yes. It is produced by hydrogenating refined rapeseed oil and contains no animal-derived material, which together with its European origin is a large part of why it has gained ground in natural and vegan candle ranges.
