Palm Stearin

Palm stearin is the solid fraction recovered when palm oil is crystallised and separated from palm olein. It contains a distribution of triglycerides enriched in higher-melting components relative to the liquid fraction. Commercial stearins span different compositions and thermal profiles, making the fraction specification more informative than the common name alone. The material can be assessed as a structural lipid in oil-rich blends and as a saponifiable input in soap manufacture. In a formulation, the relevant question is how its solid fraction develops through the actual heating and cooling cycle. Palm stearin should be distinguished from palm kernel stearin and from palm-derived stearic acid. Agree the required melting or softening behaviour, solid-fat profile, colour and odour. Review refining history, fatty-acid identity, acidity and oxidation quality for the nominated source. Evaluate texture, oil release and storage behaviour in the complete formulation before adopting a production specification.
